WALGA is the peak organisation of local councils in Western Australia. WALGA also provides professional advice and offers services that provide financial benefits to the councils and communities they serve. Workplace Solutions is a service provided by WALGA.
Local councils as one of Australia’s three spheres of government (federal, state, local) are at the heart of our community, providing infrastructure and services which not only help make our world work but bring people together.

Diverse WA
The state of Western Australia covers 2.5 million km2 and has a wide variety of climates and landscapes: from gorges and cattle stations in the north to tall tree forests and granite coastline to the south and a whole lot more to be found in between.The capital city of Perth is found on the southwest coast and is famous for its climate, lifestyle and beaches. Outside of the metropolitan area, WA is divided into nine diverse regional areas with major centres including Bunbury in the southwest region of the state, Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields, and Geraldton in the midwest.
Local councils in WA comprise 141 different organisations. The largest by area covers 379,000km2 making the Shire of East Pilbara the largest shire in the world, down to the smallest at only 1.2km2.

Employment opportunities
- Accountants/Deputy CEO Applicants will have an understanding of local government budgeting, financial reporting and reviewing business processes
- Building Surveyors Positions involve inspecting building work, assessing and determining building submissions and preparing reports for council meetings
- Civil Engineers A sound knowledge of engineering design procedures relating to road, streetscapes and drainage are sought
- Environmental Health Officers (Public Health) EHOs monitor and maintain public health through air, water, noise pollution controls, food hygiene and health promotion
- Operational Works Applicants who have extensive experience in roadworks, managing building projects or asset registers
- Urban and Regional Town Planners Qualified Town Planners evaluate planning applications and apply strategic skills to develop planning schemes
- Other Professionals with experience in Local Councils.
