A new study shows that the Australian agriculture sector is currently experiencing a labour shortage of at least 96,000 full-time employees, as well as 10,000 part-time workers.
The study, released by the Australian Farm Institute, also shows that the shortage is set to worsen, even threatening future growth in for businesses, unless the issue is addressed.
According to executive director Mick Keogh, the agriculture sector needs to realise it is competing with mining for regional workers. Also, the perception that people have of the farming sector needs to change in order to make the profession more attractive.
The National Farmers Federation released a study in April where it pointed to a labour shortage of 90,000.
