Experts predict an acute shortage of skills to hit South Australia next year, as baby-boomers retire at a faster rate than younger people enter the workforce.
A high number of part-time workers, along with statistics showing that younger people are staying in education longer will also contribute to further deepening the gag in skills that the region is already facing, according to social researcher Mark McCrindle.
For McCrindle, Australia will reach a state dubbed “peak labour” as soon as next year.
“Employers need to determine if they can re-engage the boomers rather than getting them to leave the workforce,” suggests Peter Vaughan, chief executive of Business SA.
According to Vaughan, the skills shortages in South Australia are not specific to any industry but “across the board”.
