Job ads reach 18-month high in Australia

Job advertisements in Australia have reached an 18-month high in July, a further sign of the country’s economic recovery.

A total of 353,000 net new jobs were added to the economy in the year to June and experts expect further rises.

"Employers are still keen to lock-in labour, perhaps remembering the skill shortages of a couple of years ago," comments Brian Redican, a senior economist at Macquarie.

A survey conducted by the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd also shows a rise of 1.3% in July from May.

The rise in job ads is the highest since January 2009 and 36.1% higher than in July 2009.

"This result highlights Australia's resilience amid the uncertain global economic backdrop," says ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan. "Employers still appear upbeat about Australia's economic prospects despite heightened external risks."
