Report rates Australian chefs shortage as ‘extreme’

With nearly 3800 unfilled chef positions in Australia, it’s no surprise that a report has described the shortage in the country as ‘extreme’.

According to the June quarter Clarius Skills Index, demand for chefs rose to 75,500 from 72,700, while supply saw an increase from 68,600 to 71,700.

The index places chefs at the top of the list of occupations with the highest levels of skills shortages in the country, right above metal and construction tradespersons.

According to the report, there is a “systematic shortage in the number of chefs in Australia” and “this is reflected in the fact that chefs are the only occupation to record an extreme skills index reading in the June quarter”.

“Anedoctal evidence suggests the take up of chef apprenticeships has jumped in line with the rising popularity of the Masterchef television series. However, industry experts are pessimistic about how many new apprentices will stay on once they are exposed to the harsh realities of being a professional chef,” says the report.
