Relocation packages not enough to fight shortages in Australia

Recruitment specialist Ready Workforce has warned that proposed relocation packages may not be enough to solve the shortage of workers in regional areas of Australia and that more action is necessary to attract people to work away from their family connections.

“If we’re advertising for a mechanic or a panelbeater, I mean certainly if there is somebody out there that's got those skills and they can be helped to relocate, but I don't know if those people are out there because we often advertise nationally and we don't get any calls at all,” said Sue Francis, spokeswoman for Ready Workforce.

The warning comes after reports that a parliamentary committee is considering if relocating people from areas where unemployment is higher would help Australia’s fight against shortages in regional areas.

According to Francis, relocation would be especially hard for vocations that are traditionally harder to fill.
