A rise in coal exports from Queensland is threatening to worsen the skills shortage already in the state, in new sectors.
Kylie Porter, chairwoman of the Mackay Chamber of Commerce, has warned about the problem following a recent deal with China that is expected to create 7000 jobs in Central Queensland. Porter added that the new deal could even attract workers from other industries, lured by the prospect of better salaries in the mining sector.
“It is not just about the great money. It’s obviously important to put the whole package together, which is also family friendly, rostering, good work environment, access to ongoing training and services,” commented Porter, referring to what employers need to do in order to attract the best skilled workers.
