Queensland housing industry in need of 16,000 workers this year

03 February 2010
The housing industry in Queensland has been hit by a skills shortage that is threatening the sector. Reports show that 16,000 workers are needed this financial year alone, with a national gap of up to 65,000 by 2012.

“Almost 60% of apprentices in key trades cancel within the first two years. Furthermore, 40% of tradespeople have no formal qualifications and acquire their skills on the job because the formal training system doesn’t meet industry needs,” said Shane Goodwin, managing director of the Housing Industry Association.

According to Goodwin, apprentice completion rates have been in steady decline over the last ten years, with 4000 building apprentices lost during the financial crisis and fewer people taking up a career in the critical trades.
