Australian cities dominate worldwide quality of living survey
Australian cities dominate worldwide quality of living standards making them attractive destinations for migrants, Mercer’s 2009 Worldwide Quality of Living Survey has found.
The analysis of 215 cities by Mercer Human Resource Consulting is based on an evaluation of 39 quality of living criteria. This includes political, social, economic and environmental factors, personal safety and health, education, transport and other public services.
Australian cities rank highly
All of the Australian cities covered in the survey secured a ranking amongst the world’s top 50 for overall quality of living.
Sydney rated 10th best city in the world
Sydney was in 10th place, just ahead of Copenhagen, Melbourne came in at 17th and Perth was ranked 21st. Sydney was also ranked the second best city for quality of life in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by Wellington (NZ), Melbourne and Perth. Auckland, in New Zealand, was the top city.
Top cities in the world
The top five cities in 2009 were Vienna in Austria, Zurich in Switzerland, Geneva in Switzerland, Vancouver in Canada and Auckland in New Zealand.
Sydney is part of New South Wales and home to about 60% of the state’s 6.9 million population. The city is well known for its breathtaking beaches and coastline and famous landmarks including the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
