Nols Van Den Berg and his family made the move from South Africa

My family and I decided to move to Australia because of the growing economy, great weather and a similar lifestyle to South Africa. Monadelphous was appealing to me as a company because of its family-oriented environment and commitment and support with the 457 visa process and my permanent residency. The people have been great and I love the outlook and values that they believe to be important, especially the safety awareness which brings comfort because I know I will be safe at work.

I have now been a planning manager with Monadelphous’s Engineering Construction division for one year and nine months and am involved with the pre-tender and tender phase of projects. When winning a project, my responsibility is to get the planning team on board and create detail construction schedules liaising with cost manager, material manager, construction manager and clients. I find my job challenging and rewarding and really enjoy knowing I’m part of a good team working together to achieve the same goal.

The biggest challenge my family and I faced moving to Australia was financially, as we moved to Canada first and then after three years immigrated to Australia. This put a tremendous financial burden on us initially but the good salary and cheap lifestyle made it possible to save money easily to accommodate the short falls we’ve experienced. Other than that, the weather feels like we’re in South Africa and the quality of life, safety of us as a family and good legal system (that works) is a pleasure – plus Aussies are great people!

Monadelphous values open mindedness, honesty, hard work and commitment, which has led to a culture of ‘doing what we say we’re going to do and doing it better’. As a result we hear lots of people saying they wished they worked for Monadelphous and clients and other contractors and suppliers view Monadelphous as a fierce competitor in the market.

Moving to Australia and working with Monadelphous has given me the freedom to express how I feel, the forum to contribute new ideas and the opportunity to meet the great people I work with, who are now like family.
