Life Down Under With Spencer Cullen
“Had I realised just how good Australia was with the opportunities that are available and how fantastic the weather is, I would have emigrated years ago”
Spencer Cullen, the state manager for Western Australia, has set-up home in the picturesque city of Perth – the hub of Australia's mining industry.
"Perth is a beautiful place, the weather is fantastic, and the sea is almost as warm as the people," he says. Perth is the major city in Western Australia, a relatively new town situated at the mouth of the Swan River, a short drive to Albany and Busselton and in only a few hours drive you are in the heart of Australia's Outback.
Spencer joined Electrix Pty Ltd in December 2008 – starting at Electrix's head office in Melbourne. "After seeing the role on the internet, applying over the web and a telephone interview, I soon emigrated from the United Kingdom on a 457 Visa kindly sponsored by Electrix. They made the immigration process so easy as they know it so well, after a few forms and a few weeks, I was there!"
He spent a year in Melbourne, Australia's multicultural capital, commencing as the Estimating Manager. Living in Footscray, the home of Australian Football Leagues Western Bulldogs, Spencer found it easy to get into the city by train, tram, bus or taxi. "Melbourne is a buzzing place, lots to do, lots of places to go and with a public transport system that rivals anywhere in the world. Melbourne does have the biggest tram network in the world!”
With a year in Melbourne, Spencer relocated to Perth in December 2009. "Electrix is a progressive and expanding company, and when I saw the opportunity to relocate from Melbourne to Perth in Western Australia I jumped at the chance – I haven't looked back."
With Perth being the centre of Western Australia’s mining infrastructure, the construction industry is booming. Australia has sailed through the Global Financial Crisis with minimal effect owing to its vast natural resource, and now that the world economy is picking up, the expansion and growth in Western Australia is set to continue at an exponential rate. "I can't think of a better place to start a family, the opportunities now and in the foreseeable future are virtually limitless."
"I lived a hectic life in the UK, typically running the rat race," he says. "Moving to Melbourne saw a much needed improvement in my work life balance, then moving onto Perth enhanced that even further. Life here is a lot more about living than working.” With the glorious and warm Indian Ocean, Bali and New Zealand just a short flight away (and wonderful weather) means Spencer is rarely out of shorts. He comments "Perth, and Australia in general, is an idyllic place to live!"
