Brian Race and his family love everything Australia has to offer

I took up the position of HME Maintenance Planner at Komatsu Australia in Perth in Western Australia in June 2008, supporting Rio Tinto Iron Ore, which has over 200 units of large mining machines. My wife and two children stayed back in the UK to finalise the sale of our house and followed me out in August 2008.

Since my employment at Komatsu Australia, I have taken up a new role as National production control manager, supporting Komatsu mining machines with remanufactured major components.

My two girls are now 19 and 11 and love everything Australia has to offer. Both settled in really quickly and have made lots of new friends and love their school. My wife, Michelle, found work very quickly and is now working as a self-employed medical transcriptionist, which she does from home. This is ideal as she is able to take Kaylee to and from school, something she was not able to do in the UK as she worked full-time as an office manager for a pharmaceutical engineering company.

Our move was supported by our family and friends, and Komatsu was there every step of the way helping with paperwork and the visa requirements.

I would say the cost of living in Australia is a lot less than the UK and of course the weather is second to none. After two years here it still seems like a holiday every weekend.

If you are considering a move to Australia but have some doubts, put those doubts to one side and make the move. You will not regret it and the opportunities are fantastic.
