The town of Esperance has a population of around 13,000 people. It is situated on the south coast of Western Australia in the Goldfields region, approximately 740 kilometres south of Perth.

The climate is mild, with a summer average maximum temperature of 26°C, although temperatures above 35°C can occur. In winter, daytime maximum temperatures average 17-18°C dropping to an average of 8°C at night. Temperatures below 4°C are rare.

Farming is the backbone of the economy, particularly wheat, barley, lupins and canola. Mining and aquaculture are also new and developing industries for the town.

Cape Le Grand, Stokes and Cape Arid are spectacular national parks, with bays of multi-hued blue ocean and fine white sand on which the local kangaroo population regularly sunbathe.  Bushwalking and camping in these areas are popular recreational activities for locals and tourists alike.  Many different species of flora can be seen at this time, including native orchids and banksias.

Esperance is a major population centre with infrastructure including shops, schools, a university, leisure/recreational facilities and government agencies. There are many sporting and recreational clubs and associations for families and children including a skate park and mini golf. Water sports are very popular here and include cruises, fishing charters, diving, boating, snorkelling, surfing and kite surfing.

Esperance has three public and two private primary schools, with facilities available for children with special needs. A number of excellent child-care facilities are also available.

There is a high school and a Curtin University campus, offering a range of courses in academic and vocational fields. The Esperance Community College holds adult learning classes and has video conferencing facilities and a comprehensive library.

Rural Health West

Rural Health West has an unparalleled understanding of general practice across rural Western Australia. We provide extensive support services to general practitioners who work in rural and remote Western Australia. These services include orientations to local medical practice, family support, financial incentives, education and upskilling.

Placements are available in regional centres, smaller communities and, for those doctors with suitable skills and experience, in solo practices. We are also seeking doctors to work within the Aboriginal Medical Services. These services are specialised medical facilities that address the specific health needs of Indigenous Australians.
