The practice is an Aboriginal controlled primary health service that provides holistic, culturally appropriate curative services with integrated preventative programs. Established in 1987, the organisation runs programs relating to maternal and child health, women’s health, chronic disease and sexual health. It is also a teaching practice for GP Registrars, through the Western Australia General Practice Education and Training (WAGPET).

The service is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals including two full time equivalent (FTE) general practitioners, Aboriginal health workers and registered nurses. Services include the provision of first aid kits and basic pharmaceuticals; transport is also available to people in need as part of an outreach function. The practice is accredited and computerised for appointments, results and scripts using Project Ferret and Mmex.

The Shire of Halls Creek is situated in the Kimberley Region, the most northern region of Western Australia, approximately 2,870 kilometres northeast of Perth and 1,290 kilometres southwest of Darwin. The Shire encompasses a vast and unique area of approximately 142,908 square kilometres with a population of around 3,620 people.  The Shire has an Indigenous population of an estimated 84 percent. It is also the fourth fastest growing shire in Western Australia.

Halls Creek is subject to a tropical monsoonal climate with pleasant temperatures year round; it has typically warm winters and hot, humid summers. There are two main seasons. The ‘Wet Season’ falls between November and April, at which time the region is prone to cyclones and torrential rain; while the ‘Dry Season’ falls between May to October, with typically warm, dry days and cooler nights.

There are several internationally recognised attractions in and around the Shire of Halls Creek. The World Heritage Listed Bungle Bungle Ranges are perhaps the most renowned and boast a ‘hidden world’ of magnificent gorges, tropical pools, dramatic caves and world famous Aboriginal rock art. The Ranges are situated in Purnululu National Park, which was created around 350 million years ago. The Park is the ultimate place to experience your own ‘Outback Adventure’!

The Shire of Halls Creek has a well established business district. Educational facilities include a District High School, catholic primary school and a Halls Creek campus of the Kimberley TAFE. Other local amenities include a public library, aquatic and recreational centre, race course, golf course and youth centre.

Rural Health West

Rural Health West has an unparalleled understanding of general practice across rural Western Australia. We provide extensive support services to general practitioners who work in rural and remote Western Australia. These services include orientations to local medical practice, family support, financial incentives, education and upskilling.

Placements are available in regional centres, smaller communities and, for those doctors with suitable skills and experience, in solo practices. We are also seeking doctors to work within the Aboriginal Medical Services. These services are specialised medical facilities that address the specific health needs of Indigenous Australians.
