We require a State Manager to look after the South Australian arm of John Holland’s SMP Division which is planned to grow exponentially over the next few years. The person we seek will have the ability to capture and develop a vision for the long term growth of one of the largest and fastest growing Structural Mechanical Construction Companies in Australia. We are seeking a leader who can astutely oversee both the contractual and commercial aspects of a number of major projects in Queensland. Most importantly, we are looking for a ‘people person’ – someone who can command the respect of people at all levels within the organization and motivate people within a team environment. It is likely that you will also have the experience to provide ongoing industrial relations advice to the project teams under your control when appropriate. Naturally you will be committed to maintaining the highest safety standards.

To be considered for this position it is likely that you will be a person with the experience of 3-4 construction projects >$50m under your belt with 5+ years experience in Project Management/Operations Management roles on large scale Structural/Mechanical construction projects. It is also probable that you will have worked for one or more of the large players in the construction and or mining industry either in Australia or on the world scene. It should be stressed that this position is for a high achiever and someone with a capacity to manage multiple multi million dollar projects.

You will report directly to the Regional Operations Manager (Eastern Region) and will be responsible for successfully directing and coordinating multiple construction projects.

You will most likely have experience in industries like materials handling, heavy fabrication, marine expansions, plant upgrades, maintenance and shutdowns, fabrication and corrosion control, marine/jetty construction, oil and gas, mining, processing equipment, power stations, heavy industrial, minerals processing.

Preferred pre-requisites for this position include tertiary qualifications in construction management and/or engineering together with solid practical experience.

We are seeking a leader who has vision, depth and entrepreneurial flair. You will be a ‘big picture’ person with the ability to take a helicopter view’. You will also be someone who provides direction to drive and maintain the current momentum in business development, be strategically focused and competent and make sound technical and commercial judgments.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
• Mentoring and developing future leaders;
• Attracting highly motivated, committed and hard working staff;

• Developing strong client relationships;
• Building strong project teams
• Mentoring, motivating, leading staff;
• Controlling resources to deliver project directives;
• Exceed financial and project targets;
• Identifying risks and developing strategies to manage these.

It is an expectation that the successful applicant will have a minimum of the following skills and attributes:

• Adelaide based or willing to relocate to Adelaide;
• Leadership experience in heavy industrial construction
• Experience with marine/steel frame (not civil or building),
• Materials handling (coal/iron ore, etc), Process (alumina/oil & gas),
• Strong contract management focused
• Solid knowledge of contract law basics and how to apply it;
• Strong financial, commercial skills and contracts management skills;
• Strong client focus;
• A leader in safety;
• Strong negotiation and presentation skills;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Relevant tertiary qualifications;
