Macquarie organises its activities into six operating groups, specialising in defined product or market sectors. These six groups are:

- Macquarie Capital
- Treasury & Commodities Group
- Equity Markets Group
- Funds Management Group.
These six operating groups are then supported by three support areas specialising in the areas of risk management, IT and a range of other disciplines including human resources, business services, finance, taxation and company secretarial. Macquarie has grown substantially since its establishment in Australia in 1969 and has reported successive years of record profits and growth since 1992. Since then, Macquarie has evolved from an Australian institution growing internationally to a global institution headquartered in Australia.
Number of employees
At 31 January 2008, the number of Macquarie staff globally was 12,400. In Australia alone we have 7378 staff.
