Working in Australia

ASC

Building and maintaining Australia’s naval defences

Initially established in 1985 as Australian Submarine Corporation, we were subsequently chosen in 1987 as the prime contractor for the design, manufacture and delivery of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) fleet of six Collins Class submarines.

For 21 years, we have built on our strengths and commitments, which led to our being awarded the role of shipbuilder for the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer Program.  The project will see the most advanced and complex warships ever built in Australia being constructed in our Osborne shipbuilding facility in South Australia.

In December 2003, we signed a multi-billion dollar contract for the through-life support of the Collins Class submarines over 25 years.  The contract assigns us with responsibility for the design, maintenance and enhancement of the Class until the end of their operational lifecycle.

Our vision is to develop and deliver competitive advanced engineering design, development and integration services for major defence capability requirements and to broaden this competence over time.

An organisation on the move

1300 employees work at our Adelaide and Perth facilities to ensure the Collins Class submarines remain world-competitive, swelling to 2000 as we grow in our role as shipbuilder.

Employee benefits

Our recruitment approach is built on actively managing employee talent and encouraging skill development, building leadership potential, rewarding high performance and recognising an employee’s individual contribution to the organisation.

ASC employees enjoy highly competitive salaries and conditions under agreements which offer generous performance-based bonus schemes and tax effective salary sacrificing or paid overtime provisions. ASC also believes it is critical that employees enjoy a work/life balance and offers staff the best opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge.

Ongoing Employment Opportunities

ASC is seeking high-quality engineers across a range of disciplines as well as planners, managers, cost analysts, commercial specialists and candidates with expertise in procurement.

We are involved in the Maritime Skills Centre, which will focus on developing specific shipbuilding skills. Employees who are drawn from other industry sectors will be trained to higher skill levels while ASC is also working alongside the University of Adelaide as part of the institutions’ Maritime Engineering course.

A new defence Masters degree, co-developed by ASC and the university, fills an important void in the engineering education for construction ships and submarines.
